what it used to be until 1987. When the AA Highway opened in 1994, running right past the Crum’s farm, Helen decided to take advantage of the busy road and open a fabric shop at the front of the old building. Soon other crafters were asking Helen and Donnie to sell their merchandise. So this new business got it’s start.

In the course of starting up their new business, Helen and Donnie sought advice from the state department of tourism. They were encouraged to use their rural identity. It was a good fit. Consequently, the Crums named their new business The Chicken Coop.

10,000 Shoppers per year!In it’s first year, 1995, The Chicken Coop attracted 35 vendors. Today it showcases over 180 vendors, plus a waiting list. Owners Donnie and Helen Crum estimate that 10,000 customers a year travel from places as far away as South Carolina and more to visit The Chicken Coop.

Helen really likes the fact that about 90 percent of their merchandise is created by local crafters. She says,“You’re really helping a lot of local people.”
